Cleaning star Mrs Hinch, whose real name is Sophie Hinchliffe, garnered popularity after sharing her cleaning tips and recommendations on social media and TV. The cleaning enthusiast has managed to gain over 4.1 million followers on Instagram. Now, fans of hers have created their own social media groups dedicated to cleaning and tidying tips.

On one of the groups, a Facebook user asked how to clean a washing machine and prevent it from smelling.

Sheila Haggerty said: “Hi, when I put my washing machine on the smell is horrendous.

“I have bought a machine cleaner but it still smells awful. Can anyone help? Thank you.”

Fortunately, other Mrs Hinch fans had a plethora of tips to offer.

Some cleaning enthusiasts recommended natural methods, while others advised chemical solutions.

But one tip stood out from the rest: use soda crystals.

Soda crystals are available in major supermarkets and cost very little.

The product is only 65p at Asda and 80p at Tesco.

Natalie Jane wrote: “It’s possible the washing machine cleaner has loosened all gunk in the pipes hence the smell.

“You may need to clean it again. I personally don’t buy washing machine cleaners – I use one cup of soda crystals in the drum along with a good few squirts of lemon juice then fill the softener compartment up with white vinegar.

“Set it to self-clean or a 90 wash and job done.”

The cleaning enthusiast added: “It’s cheap and effective.”

Lesley Taylor simply said: “Soda crystals in the drum on a hot wash.”

Sammy Dodson commented: “Plenty of soda crystals in the drum, few caps of Zoflora and spray the rubbers with Astonish mould spray and put on a hot empty cycle. Check/clean filter at bottom too.”

Some Mrs Hinch fans recommended other cleaning products.

Angela Brace wrote: “Put some bleach in drawer and run a cold wash. Then do a hot rinse.”

Ange Richmond advised: “Two dishwasher tablets on a hot wash, once done wipe rubber, drum and inside door with neat Zoflora, leave open overnight and it should be clean.

“I do mine every few months and leave door open overnight as much as I can, normally around three times a week. Just helps any stale water dry after washes.”

Allyson Treglown McGregor wrote: “Zoflora or a dishwasher tablet in the drum.”

Michelle Hill added: “I put a dishwasher tablet in the drum with nothing else and did a wash on 90 and it’s gotten rid of the smell in mine.”
