PIP is formally known as Personal Independence Payments, and the financial sum can help people living with a health condition or disability. The payment is tax-free and a person will receive it whether they are in work or not. PIP is based on how severely their condition impacts them rather than the condition itself.

It is for this reason, then, that certain individuals who are living with stress or anxiety may be able to put in a claim.

Some may associate a PIP claim with a physical condition or need, however, those who may be struggling with mental health can also gain support.

Anxiety or stress could create additional financial burdens for those who are living with the condition.

This issue was touched upon by mental health charity, Mind, who explained: “For many of us, it can mean we need extra support to get to work, to see family and friends and to carry on living our lives.

“That’s why benefits like PIP can make such a difference. Getting the right support can mean those of us with mental health problems won’t face a financial penalty when doing things that are important to us.”

Those living with stress or anxiety and who wish to claim via PIP will be required to fill out an application form.

This form often requires individuals to detail how their condition affects them on a day-to-day basis to provide the DWP with a bigger picture. 

Question 13 of the PIP claim form focuses on going out, and how a condition can affect this.

This could often be an important question for those with stress and anxiety, as leaving the house may impact these individuals.

As a result, there is some level of guidance to help Britons answer this question to the best of their ability.

Citizens Advice explains: “Tell the DWP if stress or anxiety make it difficult for you to plan a journey, follow a route or leave the house.

“Try to say how often you experience this, and how long it lasts. It’s okay to estimate or say if it is too difficult to predict.

“Try to explain how stress or anxiety makes it difficult for you to speak or deal with people, can increase the risk of you getting lost or make you feel – for example, sick, faint, confused or disoriented.”

Stress or anxiety may also impact a person’s ability to carry out other tasks as listed in the PIP claim form.

In this case, they should always provide as much detail as possible to help with their claim.

The amount of PIP a person will receive is likely to vary based on their circumstances.

However, the Government have outlined the rates of PIP a person may expect to receive.

For the daily living part of PIP, the weekly rate is split into two tiers – either £60.00 or £89.60.

Alternatively, the mobility part also has two rates – set at either £23.70 or £62.55 per week.

As a result, those on the higher rate for both elements of PIP can expect to receive up to £608 per month. 

The amount a person receives is not affected by their income or savings.
